How to Keep Grass Alive in Dry Months

Water, Water, and More Water

The most obvious answer is ensure your grass receives the water it needs is by installing a sprinkler or irrigation system. By consistently watering your lawn early in the morning, you’re giving your grass a fighting chance to make it through the summer heat each day. 5 in the morning is the perfect time to schedule your irrigation system. Approximately 1 to 1.5 inches of water each week should do the trick.

Keep the Lawn Mower Set to High

If you allow your grass to get a little taller between cuttings and set the height of your lawn mower to approximately 3 inches, the roots of your grass will receive a little extra shade throughout the day. Shade will keep the roots from dying and therefore help to keep your grass alive throughout the drought season. 

Don’t Forget to Fertilize

The added strain of the drought can limit the amount of nutrients that the roots of your grass can absorb. We generally recommend applying a fertilizer to your yard every 6 weeks to ensure your grass receives the nutrients it needs. Look for a fertilizer that is low in nitrogen so that the grass doesn’t grow too quickly between feedings. 

Another way to recycle nutrients back into the soil is to use a mulching lawnmower. That way the clippings go directly back to the soil to provide some extra nutrition.
